会科学和历史学的方法，增强对宗教的更通俗形式和社会学解释的关注。瑜伽行派作为佛教中极其复杂、繁琐和哲学性的流派，没有活泼感性的即时表现，很少有流行的、甚或新近的“通俗”形式，因此自然失宠。
在众多的瑜伽行派博士论文中，有些值得留意。阿那克的著作最早就是他的博士论文。施米特许森论述瑜伽行派的就职论文一直没有出版，但是他对有关阿赖耶识经典文献的全面考察，留下了对瑜伽行派这一基本概念的最彻底的讨论。＇41＇约翰·鲍尔斯（John Powers）从藏文翻译了《解深密经》，并设法从中写出了几部著作：一本是翻译本身，一本是瑜伽行派的文献索引，一本是分析综述，还有一部有关西藏文献的评论。＇42＇保罗·格里菲斯（Paul Griffiths）关于灭尽定的博士论文出版于1986年。＇43＇在裤谷宪昭（HAKAMAYA Noriaki）作访问学者的时候，威斯康辛…曼德森大学开设了一个研讨班，翻译了《摄大乘论》的第10章，附有藏文版与中文版的对比译文和部分注释。＇44＇
在没有出版的博士论文中，以下几部值得注意。约翰·基南（John Keenan）的论文是《佛地论研究：瑜伽思想中智概念在教义中的发展》 ＇45＇，有关资料译自玄奘的中文本。基南还出版了其它有关瑜伽行派的著作。＇46＇有关唯识思想发展的最好的考察之一是罗纳德·戴维森（Ronald Davidson）的《佛教的转变系统：瑜伽行派的转依》。＇47＇艾伦·斯朋伯格（Alan Sponberg）的博士论文对窥基的生平与著作作了全面的考察，包括对《大乘法苑义林章》卷三“论唯识”的翻译。＇48＇虽然斯坦利·温斯坦（Stanley Weinstein）已经出版了有关窥基的仅有的几部英文著作之一＇49＇，但他的博士论文对良遍僧都（Ryohen…Sozu）《观心觉梦抄》（Kanjin Kakumusho）这部开创性的日本瑜伽行派著作的翻译一直没有出版。＇50＇莱斯利·卡瓦穆拉（Leslie Kawamura）在硕士论文中翻译了《唯识三十颂》安惠的论释＇51＇，在博士论文中翻译了调伏天的论释。＇52＇卡瓦穆拉还以晓白的英语出版了最重要的日本瑜伽行派学者长尾雅人（NAGAO Gadjin）的著作。＇53＇罗伯特·吉麦罗（Robert Gmelllo）关于华严宗创始人智俨的著作，是有关6至7世纪中国佛教史最好的英文著作之一（可惜没有出版）。＇54＇ 这一论文虽然在表面上是论述华严，但如前所述，在这一时期，华严是唯识争论的温床，吉麦罗令人钦佩地含盖了这些。对中文语境中的唯识争论，有类似意义的，还有刘明伍（Ming…wood Liu）关于华严宗的另一位创始人法藏的论文。＇55＇林镇国对《解深密经》的研究和部分翻译，使用了中文译本，提出了有关佛教诠释学的重要问题。＇56＇我自己的论文是即将出版的这部著作的胚胎：《佛教现象学——唯识佛教的哲学考察与〈成唯识论〉》（Curzon Press）。我为《劳特利奇（Routledge）哲学百科全书》撰写的“唯识”条目，则提供了另外一种唯心主义的解释。
在这一时期，并非由博士论文派生出的著作包括：戴安娜·保罗（Diana Paul）对真谛《转识论》研究和翻译，这部对《唯识三十颂》的翻译，深深地淹没在评论性的注释当中。＇57＇她在历史和哲学语境上的尝试有严重的缺陷，她的译文误读了《唯识三十颂》的多个部分。＇58＇卡鲁帕哈那（Kalupahana）提供了对世亲的论述，但听起来更象是威廉·詹姆斯（William James），而不是唯识。＇59＇ 查特吉（K。N。Chatterjee）出版的对《唯识二十论》和《唯识三十颂》的翻译是有疑问的＇60＇，夏尔马（T。R。Sharma）对《唯识二十论》的翻译略微仔细，但同样有问题。＇61＇托马斯·伍德（Thomas Wood）做了勇敢而混乱的努力，出版了翻译和分析唯识文献的集子。＇62＇最终，斯瓦狄·甘古利（Swati Ganguly）提供了一个《成唯识论》的节略翻译，结合了玄奘在唯识三十颂翻译＇63＇中的评论。
我没有仔细讨论西方对源于藏文资料的研究，如韦曼（Wayman）＇64＇、卡吉亚玛（Kajiyama）＇65＇、塔兹（Tatz）、＇66＇冈瑟（Guenther）＇67＇等等。＇68＇加雷斯·斯巴汉姆（Gareth Sparham）的《雄辩之海》，翻译了宗喀巴对唯识的讨论，是有价值的＇69＇，近来，杰弗里·霍布金斯（Jeffrey Hopkins）发表了两部著作中的一部，全面涉及到宗喀巴和唯识在西藏的传译。＇70＇现在西方学者开始超出单一的格鲁巴派，而把眼光扩展到西藏佛教其他宗派，如宁玛派等，在这些宗派中，唯识和汉传唯识的影响更为普遍，我们也期望有更多的人来关注唯识。
最后需要说明的是，三年前我成为美国宗教学会瑜伽行派专题小组的成员。这个小组得到的反响令我们不知所措，在乔·威尔逊（Joe Wilson）和查克·马勒（Chuck Muller）的主持下，我们组成了瑜伽行派研讨组，在每年的美国宗教学会（AAR）年会上开会。这个研讨组有一个网页＇71＇，上面有发布的论文和电子邮件讨论的名单，这个网页迄今运作的远不能说规范，但一直充满希望。令人惊异的是很多人都表达了参加这一研讨组的强烈兴趣。另外使我们兴奋的是，一批传统上是佛教逻辑专业的即将从研究生院毕业的青年学者，看到了他们所研究对象的瑜伽行派特性。令人困惑的是某些研讨组成员对阿毗达磨的抵制。一句话，我们对瑜伽行派研究在21世纪的繁荣充满希望。
